Beyond Sailing: Why Understanding Composite Repair Matters on the Great Lakes

May 28th, 2026

In sailing, confidence is built long before leaving the dock. It comes through preparation, systems knowledge, and understanding how a vessel functions under load, stress, and changing conditions.

At Detroit Charter Company, our goal is to create greater access to the technical side of sailing.  Helping sailors, crew, and boat owners better understand how vessels are built, how composite systems function, and how to properly evaluate damage when conditions matter most.

That is the philosophy behind our Fiberglass & Composite Repair Workshop.

This is not a casual DIY seminar.
It is practical marine systems education designed around real-world sailing applications and performance vessels.

Why Composite Knowledge Matters

Modern performance yachts rely heavily on fiberglass and composite construction. While these materials are exceptionally strong and lightweight, they require a different level of understanding than traditional boatbuilding materials.

For sailors, crew, and owners, understanding composite systems creates a deeper level of confidence on the water. It changes the way you evaluate wear, inspect a vessel, respond to damage, and think about long-term vessel readiness.

The objective is not turning participants into full time repair technicians overnight. The objective is to have informed capability. Understanding what you are looking at, what constitutes a proper repair, and when structural work should be deferred to professionals.

This workshop is being led in collaboration with Gougeon Brothers / WEST SYSTEM Epoxy, internationally recognized as one of the foremost authorities in fiberglass, epoxy systems, and composite repair within the marine industry. Their decades of innovation and technical expertise have helped shape modern standards in high performance marine construction and repair.

Whether sailing locally on weekends or offshore on the Great Lakes during Mackinac races, that knowledge matters.

Sailing Demands More Than Boat Handling

As sailors transition into larger race programs and more advanced sailing experiences, expectations change dramatically. High performance vessels are complex systems operating under constant load and environmental stress.

Knowing how to trim sails is important.
Knowing how to assess structural integrity is equally important.

This workshop introduces participants to the logic behind composite construction and repair, helping them understand:

  • How fiberglass structures distribute load
  • The difference between cosmetic and structural damage
  • Why proper surface preparation matters
  • How laminate orientation affects strength
  • The risks of moisture intrusion and delamination
  • Why improper repairs can compromise performance and safety

These are the details that separate casual familiarity from true preparedness on the water.

Hands On Learning in a Real Marine Environment

There is a significant difference between watching repair videos online and learning directly within a working marine environment.

Participants are exposed to the realities of composite systems aboard large performance vessels while gaining insight into the methods, discipline, and attention to detail required in professional marine work.

For junior sailors, it creates technical exposure rarely available early in a sailing career.
For racers and owners, it sharpens decision making and vessel awareness.
For individuals interested in marine trades, it provides a valuable foundational understanding of one of the industry’s most important skill sets.

Building a Stronger Sailing Culture in Detroit

Detroit has always been a city built by skilled hands, technical craftsmanship, and innovation. The future of Detroit’s waterfront culture should reflect that same mindset.

At Detroit Charter Company, the goal is to create greater access to the technical side of sailing.  Expanding understanding of seamanship, systems knowledge, craftsmanship, safety, and stewardship of the vessels themselves.

Because confidence on the water is not built through theory alone.
It is built through understanding.
