The Experience
The Ambassador Cup is a three-day waterfront event that takes place August 28th-30th 2026. This brings high-performance sailing directly to the Detroit River while remaining free and open to the public. Racing takes place just offshore from the Riverwalk, creating a spectator-facing course where starts, turns, and finishes unfold in full view.
Designed for visibility and access, the event places Santa Cruz 70 racing yachts directly in front of the city. The format is built around short, repeatable races, allowing spectators to stay engaged as the action resets and builds throughout the day.
Racing is staged near the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority, with multiple viewing points along the waterfront. The result is a city-scale experience where the skyline, river, and racing environment come together in one continuous setting.

Full Description
The Ambassador Cup transforms the Detroit River into a spectator-focused racecourse, placing high-performance sailing directly in front of the city. The event is designed to maximize visibility, with short-format races that bring continuous action within view of the Riverwalk.
Each day builds on the last, beginning with opening activities on Friday and progressing into full race schedules over the weekend. Racing is staged directly offshore from the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority dock, creating a central viewing area with multiple vantage points along the waterfront.
Between races, the riverfront remains active with food, beverages, and ongoing event programming. The format allows spectators to move freely, follow the racing from different positions, and remain engaged throughout the day.
The weekend concludes with championship racing and an awards presentation, establishing the Ambassador Cup as a new annual event centered on Detroit’s waterfront.
